Modal fabric is a bio-based fabric made from beech tree cellulose. It is often considered a more environmentally friendly option than cotton because beech trees do not require much water to grow, so the production process uses 10 to 20 times less water than cotton. Modal fabric is a semi-synthetic fiber, knitted fabric manufacturer mainly used to make clothing, such as underwear and pajamas. It is characterized by a silky feel and is often promoted as a more natural and sustainable option.

How is Modal fiber made?

1. Raw material selection: The production of Modal fiber starts with the selection of raw materials. Typically, sorbitol from sustainably managed forests, such as beech or birch, is used. These woods are the key raw materials for fiber production.
2. Wood crushing: The selected wood is first crushed into small pieces and then converted into wood pulp through chemical methods. This step involves mixing the wood chips with specific chemicals to break down its cellulose structure.
3. Pulping: Next, through a series of chemical reactions, the cellulose in the wood pulp is extracted and impurities are removed.
4. Dissolution: The extracted cellulose is then dissolved in a special solvent called NMMO.
5. Wet spinning: The dissolved cellulose solution is squeezed through tiny holes to form long and thin fibers. These fibers are coagulated into filaments in a coagulation bath, a process called wet spinning.
6. Post-processing: The spun fibers become usable Modal fibers after a series of post-processing steps such as washing, drying, and winding.
7. Finished products: Modal fibers are made into strands or directly woven into fabrics for the production of various clothing and household items.

Throughout the process, the manufacturer focuses on environmentally friendly measures, such as recycling and reusing NMMO solvent in the fiber manufacturing process and using sustainable forestry management to obtain raw wood.
