Is the color fastness of yarn-dyed fabric better than that of dyed fabric?

Dec 6, 2024

Yarn-dyed fabrics usually have better color fastness than dyed fabrics. Yarn-dyed fabrics are made by dyeing the yarn before weaving. This process allows the dye to penetrate the fiber more evenly, thereby enhancing the adhesion and durability of the color. In contrast, dyed fabrics are woven first and then dyed. The dye only adheres to the surface of the fiber and is easily affected by the external environment and fades.

Difference Between Yarn-Dyed and Piece-Dyed Fabrics

  1. Yarn-Dyed Fabric
Yarn-dyed fabric is made by dyeing the yarn or fibers first and then weaving them into fabric. Since the yarn is dyed thoroughly, the color typically remains stable even after repeated washing or exposure to sunlight.
  2. Piece-Dyed Fabric
Piece-dyed fabric is dyed after the fabric has been woven. Because the dye mainly adheres to the surface of the fabric, its colorfastness may be slightly weaker, especially when subjected to abrasion or repeated washing.

The color fastness advantages of yarn-dyed fabrics are usually reflected in the following aspects:

1.Abrasion resistance: Since dyeing occurs at the yarn level, the color is not easy to fall off the surface of the fabric.
2.Washing resistance: The dye and fiber of yarn-dyed fabrics are tightly combined and are not easy to fade when washed.
3.Ultraviolet resistance: The dye of yarn-dyed fabrics often fades slower than dyed fabrics in sunlight.

Yarn-dyed fabrics are more expensive to produce because each yarn needs to be dyed, and their designs are fixed, with limited choices of patterns and colors.
