Comparison between Rayon and Tencel

Oct 5, 2024

Rayon and Tencel fiber are both regenerated fibers which derived from natural cellulose sources, such as wood pulp. And they all processed through chemical treatments. While they share similarities, there are some key differences as below:

1. Source of Material

  • Rayon: Normally made from kinds of plant materials such as wood, bamboo, etc., processed to extract cellulose fibers.
  • Tencel: Usually sourced from sustainable eucalyptus trees, making it more eco-friendly.

2. Production Process&Environmental Impact

  • Rayon: Uses the traditional viscose process, posing environmental and health risks if not handled properly. It also uses a lot of water and energy during production. So it less environmentally friendly due to pollution from the chemical processing involved.
  • Tencel: Made using a more environmentally friendly closed-loop process, with less water consumption and fewer chemical by-products. where over 99% of the chemicals used are recovered and recycled, the waste generated is minimal, significantly reducing its environmental impact.

3. Texture and Comfort

  • Rayon: Known for its soft and absorbs moisture well, silky texture and excellent drape, weakens and deforms easily when wet due to low wet strength. Often used for lightweight, soft garments.
  • Tencel: Also soft, excellent moisture-wicking and breathability are stronger than Rayon. It’s ideal for summer wear or clothing close to the skin. Tencel fibers are less prone to pilling, and more durable.

4. Applications

  • Rayon: Generally more affordable, making it a cost-effective option.Used in various garments such as dresses, shirts, lingerie, and home textiles.
  • Tencel: Preferred in high-end clothing, sportswear, bedding, and baby products due to its eco-friendly properties and superior comfort.

Summary

Tencel is more eco-friendly and durable, with superior comfort, making it ideal for consumers who prioritize sustainability and quality. Rayon, on the other hand, is more cost-effective and is a suitable choice for those looking for budget-friendly or short-term wear.
